New Boating Safety Law Is In Effect Print E-mail

Have you taken your mandatory boating safety course yet? You may have to pass the safety course and receive your certificate before you can take your boat out onto the lake this year. See the chart below to determine the date you must be certified by. 

Effective January 1, 2002, no person 16 years of age or older, may operate a powerboat with an engine in excess of 25 horsepower (including electric powered motors) on the public Waters of New Hampshire without a valid safe boating education certificate. The law will be phased in over seven years with compliance for all boaters by January 1, 2008

WHEN DO I NEED TO COMPLY WITH THIS NEW LAW?

Individuals shall comply with the new law according to the following schedule:

IF BORN AFTER: MUST BE CERTIFIED BY:
January 1, 1983 but before Jan. 1, 1987 January 1, 2002
January 1, 1977 but before Jan 1, 1987 January 1, 2003
January 1, 1973 but before Jan. 1, 1977 January 1, 2004
January 1, 1967 but before Jan. 1, 1973 January 1, 2005
January 1, 1963 but before Jan. 1, 1967 January 1, 2006
January 1, 1957 but before Jan. 1, 1963 January 1, 2007
If you were born BEFORE Jan 1, 1957 January 1, 2008
