According to The National Historic Lookout Register: "Standing on the south knob of the Pawtuckaway Mountain within a state park, this was the first steel lookout tower built in N.H. The station was established in 1913 and the 25' tower erected in 1914. It was modified in 1930 and raised 10' in 1971, with a new cab installed in 1976. It is in active service."

"Fire lookouts have been a proud and prominent history in forestry. They are perceived as a symbol of forest conservation, although their role in fire detection has changed, lookouts, even abandoned ones, remain popular with visitors and offer opportunities for public involvement in forest conservation programs.

The purpose of the National Historic Lookout Register is to recognize both active and inactive fire towers and ground lookouts. Registration often leads to volunteer activities in both maintenance and educational programs at these sites. The program is a combination of positive public involvement and protection of historic sites"
