Are you a water protector or a water contaminator? Take this quiz to see how well you are protecting our water resources:

1. Do you use phosphate-free detergents?

2. Do you put all your trash in a bag and dispose on land after your boating trips?

3. Do you use fertilizers sparingly and responsibly to avoid contaminating surface water and groundwater?

4. Do you limit your use of pesticides, use them only as directed, or use alternatives?

5. If you own a waterfront home or cottage, do you protect and enhance you shoreline?

6. Do you avoid flushing chemicals down sinks or storm drains?

7. Would you participate in a local Clean Water Day?

8. Do you inspect your boat for zebra mussels and other aquatic plants, drain the bilge, and wash or dry your boat before you leave a waterbody?

9. Do you empty your bait bucket on land before leaving any waterbody?

10. Do you protect fish habitat by retaining aquatic vegetation along the shoreline?

11.Do you have regular maintenace done on your septic field or holding tank?

12. Do you practice water conservation in your household, use low-water appliances and fixtures, water the lawn sparingly, repair leaks in taps?

13. Do you compost kitchen and garden wastes and use these instead of inorganic fertilizer?

14. Do you purchase hazardous household products if there are environmentally-friendly alternatives?

15. Do you recycle old batteries and used oil?

16. Do you purchase products with the Ecologo stamp of approval?

17. Do you buy biodegradable products?

18. Do you clean up your pet's faeces and dispose with trash?

19. Do you avoid overfilling you boat's fuel tank?

20. Do you reduce your speed when you navigate your motorboat close to shore? Ê

If you answered YES to:

18-20 of the questions- you are a WATER PROTECTOR!!! You are an excellent role model for your community; keep up the good work!

13-17 of the questions- good work but there is room for improvement!

Less than 12 of the questions- you are a WATER CONTAMINATOR!!! We need your help in protecting our water resources for present and future users. Find out what you can do to help!

PLIA Mission Statement

The Pawtuckaway Lake Improvement Association (PLIA) is a Private, Non-Profit Organization formed to monitor and act upon environmental and safety issues in the Pawtuckaway Lake Watershed area. The PLIA also provides education, information, recreation and other services to its members.


The Association routinely conducts water quality sampling under the New Hampshire Volunteer Lake Assessment program of the State of New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. Other activities (sailboat races, fishing derbies, etc.) may be coordinated by the Association, but are funded by program participants.
