1960's Fire Warden Map Found Print E-mail
Written by George Voltz

This is a hand drawn map of the Pawtuckaway Mountain Trails as
they existed in the 1960's.  This map was drawn by the Lookout Tower
Warden at that time.  The map is an original, the only one that
exists is my copy, it was given to me by the Warden during the 60's.

The map shows the site of the 1945 Plane Crash, up to the early 70's I
remember finding pieces of the plane still there.  All the pieces
have since either been taken or rusted away, the site is almost
impossible to find now.

Also at the bottom of the map you will note Mountain Trail, this is
not the trail that we all know as Mountain Trail.  This was a trail
known to no one except for a few people.  The trail took you up the
face of South Mountain right up the rock face, which is why no one
knew about it.  I last tried to hike it in the 80's and was meet by
numerous beaver ponds that had flooded the trail.  The only markings
were a few notches in the trees at the beginning of the trail which
was off the State Park Road in Neals Cove.  All the markings on the
trees were gone in the 80's since they were primarily on birch trees.
I might someday try it again but this time doing it by GPS and not by
a compass.

A larger, printable version of the map is available in the Downloads section of the web site in the 'Maps & Charts' folder. Or, click the following link to go directly to the document: 1960_Warden_Map.pdf
