July has been a very busy month for the PLIA web site.  Early in the month the server that our web site was hosted on was subject to a number of hacking attempts. There was no damage done to the server or any data compromised but Hatchling, our donated hosting provider, determined that they needed to dramatically lock down those servers going forward. So, they asked us to move our site to another hosting company as soon as we could. We would like to thank Hatchling for all of their time and the free hosting that they graciously provided to us. We appreciate the help they gave us while hosting there and for their assistance in making the transition to our new hosting company.

One unexpected benefit of moving the site turned out to be the easy addition of a web-based photo gallery. While it hasn’t been formally announced yet, the link to the new gallery has been added to the main menu of the web site. A few curious members have already clicked on the “gallery” menu choice and took a peek at the construction of the new photo gallery site. This new photo gallery will make adding and managing photographs much easier (dramatically easier, actually) than with the main PLIA web site. I will be adding more photos to the gallery as the summer progresses. And, I hope more people will send in photos of Pawtuckaway now that we have a home for them!

This month I was able to do three history project interviews. The interview of Phyllis Rehill was recently posted on the site. I am putting the final touches on the interview with Dwight Crow. And, I am in the process of transcribing the interview of Henry Musial. Keep an eye out for these new interviews over the next month. What you learn about our lake history is often surprising and always entertaining.

I also had a meeting with the Department of Environmental Services in Concord to discuss ways of making the volumes of technical water testing information they produce for us more digestible. It was a good meeting and they provided me with some resources to begin a series of articles on how to read and understand the charts and reports they produce about our lake’s health. That is a project I hope to start tackling in the Fall and Winter time frame.

That’s all the news for now, so I hope to see you at the PLIA Campfire Night or the Pawtuckaway Kids Sandcastle Day!
