My partner Peggy has long told me that the big island, closest to the land en-route to Dolloff Dam is called Rabbit Island. The history there was that for years rabbits ran free and enjoyed dwelling there. In some dogs from the mainland came over and killed them all. Rabbit Island to the west is flanked by three small islands which are on the map but I have no clue as to their name. Also there is a once-up-a-time island around the corner coming from Dolloff Dam which is now connected to the land by a brief causeway. On that piece of land is the tan box home now up for sale (see Tom Duffy for details). On that once island is a sign calling it Rattle Snake Island. The occupants indicate that name was used to discourage visitors. And off the once Rattle Snake Island is a very same island. That island guards what I call Turtle Cove. I picked the name myself because I observe turtles often sunning themselves in the morning there. Some one from Lamprey Road told me that is called Blueberry Island. I bet there are many "Blueberry" Islands on the lake. So here is my point. I would like to launch the Pawtuckaway Island Names System (PINS). In this place people will advance the names they are using for the islands in their parts of the underway. Our Pawtuckaway website will be the collecting point. |

Islands represent one of the most exciting, unique, amazing, captivating features of Lake Pawtuckaway. So I kayak about it, I get to wondering what are their names. Yes, I know all the maps label the big one as Log Cabin Island (although, none of us have found evidence of a log cabin there) which is guarded in the channel approach by the Twin Islands. The Twins by their appearance give creditability to their names.
