This time of year is a great time around Pawtuckaway – nice weather and a slower pace. Most discussions at the shop involve paddling, the ‘Race’ on the Lamprey in Epping, or fishing. There has also been a major increase in kayak fishing this year – known in the business as the fastest growing aspect of paddle sports. The great early weather has opened up these water (and weather) based activities earlier this year than most. About the Canoe & Kayak Race - Each year the Epping Conservation Commission sponsors the Lamprey River Canoe Race in the spring. The race starts at the Mary Blair Ball Fields, a conservation area used for recreation in West Epping. This year's Lamprey River Canoe Race is scheduled for April 29, 2006. All races begin at the Mary Folsom Blair Park off Route 27 in Epping. Morning races are competitive and begin at 9:30am. Course is approximately 6.8 miles, and ends at the Route 87 Bridge. Registration opens at 8:00. All racers arrive by 9:00am. Prizes will be awarded Afternoon trips are non-competitive and begin at 1:00pm. Course is approximately 3 miles and ends behind the Town Hall. Registration opens at 12:00pm. Certificates of completion will be awarded to All entrants must wear life jackets!!! For more info visit www.ci.epping.nh.us/ECC/index.htm All proceeds help with conservation and water quality issues, many in the Pawtuckaway watershed area. About Fishing – NHF&G has started stocking fish earlier this year than others – this is largely due to the more reasonable water levels than most of the time in spring. Stocking activities are usually postponed until the water levels are more normal than during the heavier spring ‘run offs’ – this allows fish to forage normally rather than ‘holding up’ in holes due to excessive current – better for fish and fisherman. We’ve heard of some nice trout from the surrounding rivers and streams as well as good early bass fishing. For those interest we’re hosting our second annual ‘Kayak Bass fishing Tournament’ on Pawtuckaway on Sunday June 25th. Limited to 35 Kayaks Only – strict ‘catch & release – great prizes and a cookout. For more info visit us at www.mrtp.net or come in to the shop. Our last ‘tid-bit’ of info – about Boat Registrations: We have the current 2006 stickers and can register boats anytime we’re open – as there is no profit in this we ask that you try your best to come in during our slower times – this would be earlier in the year and not on Saturdays. We also require the registrant to be present or to have previously signed the renewal form. All new owners (transfers) must also provide a ‘Bill - of – Sale’ signed by the previous owner – and have the NH Bow numbers and Hull Serial number listed. Renewal forms are also required or you will need to visit the Registry in Epping. George Beaumont, Mountain Road Trading Post, www.mrtp.net |
