Ice-Out News
Monday, April 11, 2005 EARLY! After an Spring that didn't seem able to get started, the first 70 degree day arrived early this year, yesterday, and signalled the end of this year's Pawtuckaway Ice-Out Guessing Contest. The early warm day made Roger Clermont the 2005 winner of the coveted prize. He joins past winners Kris Parece and Nikki Rose, as the current holder of this prestigous award. Roger wins a $35 gift certificate from sponsor Mt. Road Trading Post. Runner up Dee Dee Seymour wins a $10 certificate. Congrats to our winners. A big thanks to our Ice-Out Jurors: Tom Duffy, Randy Hale, and George Voltz. And thanks to our sponsor Mt. Road Trading Post for it's continual support of the Association. So that's it for now, see you next year. Ice-Out 2006 will begin on Ground Hog Day 2006. Let's go swimming! Saturday, April 9, 2005 ICE-OUT 2005! 7:30 pm -- The Pawtuckaway Lake Ice-Out Jury has determined that today, April 9, 2005, the lake reached 98% Ice-Free. It was only 46% yesterday, so today is the official Ice-Out for 2005. That narrows the competition down to the guesses by Roger Clermont and Dee Dee Seymour. If the temp reaches 70 degrees by next Tuesday then Roger will be the grand prize winner, otherwise it's Dee Dee. Today's hi-temp was 64.1, and the forecast is for mid-60s tomorrow. After that it's supposed to get chilly for a few days. So we still have some suspense left in the contest. Stay tuned. Today could be it! The ice has been melting fast over the past few days. As usual the real holdout is the main portion of the North lake. As of this morning that was still largely covered with ice. But even that is going fast. Check back tonight or tomorrow for the latest. Friday, April 8, 2005 39% Ice-Free Jury Member TomD: "[The remaining ice is] Very Black - this weekend rain should do it..." Thursday, April 7, 2005 Close but no Havana The temps all around the area flirted with 70 yesterday, but didn't quite make it. The official Ice-Out temp, measured over in Epping, hit 63.6. And the Ice-Free percentage rose to 26%. The forecast is for some rain today, and warm but not as warm as the past two days. The rain could help things along. Check back here again tomorrow for the latest. Wednesday, April 6, 2005 Lake at 20% Ice Free The Jury has estimated it to be approximately 20% for April 5th. Jury Member Tom H states "Very thin cover - lots of black undernmeath - a warm windy day should do it!" Ice-Out in Massachusetts. From the Journey North website, Walden Pond in Mass. reached Ice-Out yesterday morning. www.learner.org

Well the Pawtuckaway Side still has a way to go before Ice Out. Check out this picture that Randy just sent. Hi George, here is the picture I promised, taken today. The edge of the ice by the end of the dock is about where it was when the water was out.Click pic for bigger. Friday, April 1, 2005 The Jury has estimated the Ice-Out percentage to be approximately 3%. Jury Member TomD says, "expect big change by Monday or Tuesday," and Jury Member RandyH says, "The only water I see [in the North lake] is caused by the risen level which makes the space larger than the ice sheet." Wednesday, March 30, 2005 Beautiful day here on Pawtuckaway. It was the warmest day we've had since last fall. The high temp was 61F. The Ice is still melting pretty slowly, but we're gaining more open water every day due to how fast the lake level is rising. Up 20 inches in the past three days. And more rain is forecast for the weekend. Right now the Ice-Out percentage is still under 5% Ice-Free, but the daily warm temps, and this weekend's rain, could change that dramatically. Tuesday, March 29, 2005 We've had 2 inches of rain in the past 24 hours (so far, 'cause it's still raining), and as a result the lake is up 9 inches since yesterday, and foot in the past two days. The amount of open water around the edge of the ice has increased dramatically as a result of the rain, but the ice-out percentage is still in the low single digits. The warm weather, and additional forecast rain, later this week could up the numbers though. Monday, March 27, 2005 And they're off! All the entries are in and the watch is on to see when the Ice is gone and the really warm weather arrives. Stay tuned over the next few days when I'll be introducing the jury members, announcing this year's prizes, and generally reporting on the progress of spring. Saturday, March 26, 2005 Big Finish Tomorrow is the final day to enter a Guess for this year's Ice-Out competition. You can still enter a Guess if you haven't entered either a first Guess, or a second Guess since Friday. Don't miss out on the fun! Starting Monday, well really starting today, we'll be posting more-or-less daily reports on the progress of the contest, and Spring in general, here on the site. Check back often. Wednesday, March 23, 2005 Ice-Out 2005 We're nearing the end of the first "Guessing Period" of this year's competition. Guesses can be entered up 'till midnight on Mar 27, but if you enter a guess by this Thursday night, you can make a SECOND guess in the final days. So don't miss out. The guessing so far is interesting. 28 people have entered a guess so far. The second and third weeks of April are the most popular choices for Ice-Out. And despite Spring's slow start, slightly more than half of the guessers (16 vs. 12) still think that the first 70 degree day will be EARLY this year. -- Jack Hodgson, Ice-Out Guesser Wrangler Wednesday, March 16, 2005 Here we go again. Getting a late start on the Ice-Out Guessing contest this year but then so is the Spring. If you played last year, note that we made some changes to try to simplify the game. This year you need to guess BOTH the ice-out date AND whether the first 70-degree day will be early or late this year. And you get to place more more than one guess too. Up to two different Guesses. See the rules. BTW, back on Feb 2 Punxatawney Phil saw his shadow thus predicting six more weeks of winter. So that means winter should be wrapping up anytime now. ... |
